Samantha Bagood
I write. No I’m not published. =) But I am aspiring to be. I’d like to be a YA author (among many other things). Before that time comes, however, I try to write everyday. I’ve written essays, short stories, and even plays–one of which have been performed three times (twice in a high school and one in NCTC). I write to understand, to connect, to help, to hear, and to be heard.
I dream. A full-time university student, I’m working to receive a B.A. in English: Creative Writing and a B.S. in Communications. I don’t just want to publish my own stories; I want to work in the publishing industry. I would love to work in a literary agency or a publishing house. One day, I’ll own a bookstore.
I read. A lot. From articles to novels, I read anything that catches my eye. Almost no genre or style escapes me. I have an eclectic taste. However, I will say that I like fiction books that are thought-provoking, emotional, and empowering. I have an affinity for coming-of-age stories and character-driven stories (which most definitely includes the YA genre) and speculative fiction. I’m also attracted to books that have interesting concepts or traditional concepts with a twist. All of them have to be well-written however (what I consider to be well written that is…).
I change. Books challenged me to improve my English (and throw away the stuttering) when I was in elementary school. They became my friends through the awkward puberty years; they became inspirations and reminders. Stories are a huge part of my life. They helped me be who I am today.
But I’m still changing—every second, every hour, and every day. I want to share that. As I improve as a writer and reader, I’d like to share my journey.
So that’s why I have this blog: it’s a documentation of my thoughts, comments, step-backs, and improvements I make. As I learn more about the writing and publishing world, I’ll be sharing my knowledge and experience. Perhaps, you’ll find something useful or enjoyable. Perhaps, you’ll comment back.
Random Facts:
The Discover Channel scarred me for life.
Exaggeration? When I was younger, I loved playing outside: climbing trees, riding bikes, learning about bugs. But ever since I saw a late night episode about creepy crawlers living inside your body (i.e. teeny tiny worms swimming on your eyeball, a nest in your stomach, etc.), I have been completely and absolutely terrified of insects and spiders! So, exaggeration? I think not.
Employment is hard to find during the summer when you’ll be gone for a third of the season.
Except for the occasional babysitting task, I will not have any other jobs during the summer of 2009. Instead, I will be volunteering overseas. From 06/18 – 07/14, I will be abroad.
I am a nerd.
I love being a nerd.
I’m studying for my two bachelor degrees at Appalachian State University.
With a welcoming and creative atmosphere, encouraging professors, and the beautiful Blue-Ridge Parkway nearby, learning has never been so fun or freeing.
If I can’t read or write or I’m just procrastinating then I…
I hang out with my friends of course. I like going out and having fun; we may go watch movies, play racquetball or tag, and eat. I even like parties and clubs now and then. When I’m home, I also like to hang out with my family. Although I don’t play anymore, I do love sports. So I like a good softball game or two, playing catch, helping my sister in lacrosse. I also like to brush up on my martial arts. I also love video games!
People mistake me for a high school student many times.
I swear I’m older than 18!

About Sambgood (the name)
Sambgood comes from my name (Samantha Bagood). I came up with it during a rather silly and “punny” mood. …It never fails to crack me up. Besides amusing me, it also reminds me to strive to be, well, good.

I don’t know if you have heard about this magazine, but Narrative Magazine is a free online magazine that is always looking for writers. They have several ongoing contests with cash prizes. Here is their summary of the current poetry contest:
Narrative’s first annual poetry contest runs from now until July 18. In a continuing effort to encourage and support poetry, we’re offering prizes, publication to the top three winners, and a public announcement of all winners and finalists via the Internet and in hard-copy literary trade publications. Wide attention will be brought to the winners and finalists in the contest.
The contest is open to all poets. Entries must be previously unpublished and must not have been previously chosen as a winner, finalist, or honorable mention in another contest. Each entry may contain up to five poems. You may enter as many times as you wish, but we encourage you to be selective and to send your best work. All entries will be considered for publication.
Awards: First Prize is $1,500, Second Prize is $750, Third Prize is $300, and ten finalists will receive $75 each. All entries will be considered for publication.
Hope you have a chance to check out Narrative, and if you like it, feel free to share the link!
